Message from the Minister for Gaming
Tony Robinson MP
Responsible Gambling Awareness Week, which runs from 26 May to 1 June 2008, is an important partnership between government, industry and community groups for the promotion of responsible gambling messages to the Victorian Community.
The key objective of the week is to raise community awareness of the importance of responsible gambling at a personal, community and venue level, with the central message of "Gamble Responsibly. Stay in Control".
This year, Nicole Livingstone, Olympian and Australian swimming great, is the Ambassador for Responsible Gambling Awareness Week and will play a key part in promoting the objectives of the week.
Information promoting responsible gambling messages will be available through community service announcements and advertising on radio, television and in newspapers. Printed material will be displayed at gaming locations around the state, including hotels, clubs, TAB and Tattslotto outlets and Crown, as well as community centres.
The week is part of the Government’s $132.3 million five-year strategy Taking Action on Problem Gambling – the biggest investment to tackle problem gambling in Australia’s history. Announced in 2006, this strategy sets out the major initiatives the Government is undertaking to address the issue of problem gambling. It is an integrated approach to consumer protection and to the prevention, early intervention and treatment of gambling related harm.
Responsible Gambling Awareness Week furthers work by the Victorian Government, industry, community groups and local government to deal with problem gambling. This week is part of the overall campaign to highlight to Victorians who enjoy gambling, to do so responsibly by staying in control.
